CREATIVE COMPETITION: Make APPA a game!

and win a £100 for your favourite cause

What is APPA?

Appa is an interactive app aimed at measuring resilience – that is, personal strength – in young people, which provides helpful advice to users and helps them overcome these issues.

The methods are scientifically based and are supported by research of psychologists across the whole country, bringing to the table a simple and easy-to-use tool to benefit all.

AIM OF THE COMPETITION

We need you to create an original progressive reward system (e.g. medals like Nike or stars like Starbucks) to make it feel like a game: Make APPA more fun!

At the moment, APPA has a series of levels, mostly constituted by short tests or small exercises, which can be helpful to the user but do not offer much reward. For this reason, we’d like to promote a gamification of the app, able to provide good motivation to its users to keep going. This should be able to target young people aged between 12 and 18.

Your design should compliment the APPA brand, aligning with the structure, layout and/or colour schemes in some way.

The successful entry will be reworked by graphic designers to turn the chosen design into graphics that can be encoded in android and apple apps.

THE PRIZE

The winner of the competition will not only receive a gift voucher for either VUE Cinema or CINEWORLD for 2 (including snacks!), but they will also be awarded a cash prize of £100. If the applicant is under 18, this sum will be donated to an organisation of the winner’s choice, whereas if over 18 you can keep it all to yourself!

COMPETITION RULES

Simply send your designs to our office and we will pick the one we like the best. Entries will be judged on:

  • Originality
  • Enjoyment
  • How well your design compliments the APPA brand.
  • All rewards offered to users should be in-game only.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the app do not create a game that encourages users to compete against each other.

Submission Requirements: You can write your idea out on half a sheet of A4 if you want or produce a load of graphics. The maximum submission should not be more than 6x A3 sheets outlining your gamification idea.

Online Entries: Online entries should be in a PDF format with a max submission size 10Mb per sheet. JPG or docx is acceptable too.

Note: Entries that are at graphic design level, which will allow us to miss out a step, will be paid at market value for their work.

Submission address: APPA Scotland, Suite 225g The Pentagon Centre, Washington Street, Glasgow, G3 8AZ

Online submission: game@myappa.it Subject heading should be “Game-<yourname>”

Closing date: Monday 17th April 2017

Resilience is key in our day and age. We want our kids to be strong, to believe in themselves, to not shy away from the difficulties of life and be ready to face them with courage and confidence.

Check out this informative TED Talk by professor Sam Goldstein. "Resilience embraces the ability of a child to deal effectively with stress and pressure, to cope with every day challenges, to bounce back from disappointments, adversity and trauma, to develop clear and realistic goals, to solve problems, to relate comfortably with others and to treat one's self and others with respect. Scientific studies of children facing great adversity in their lives support the importance of a resilient mindset as a powerful force. Resilience explains why some children overcome overwhelming obstacles, sometimes clawing and scraping their way to successful adulthood, while others become victims of their early experiences in environments."

This is what we work for and this is what we believe in for our young people. This is #APPA!
