APPA – At the centre of Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child

APPA (“Adaptive Psychological Profiling Application”) places the child at the centre of a self-assessment of their wellbeing, providing them with a tool that helps them reach out to the community resources and initiatives created by the WSCC. By generating that interaction, children using APPA will be able to cope better in times of trouble.

As parents and teachers know, a child or young adult will not always confide in them when they are troubled. So, to prevent young people falling into a vacuum where they cannot access help or even talk about their issues, APPA Scotland has come up with a novel and creative solution, “APPA”. Instead of having to sit down with a parent or teacher, the young person can engage with an avatar through the mobile app.

Child Centric – First and foremost, APPA puts the young person at the heart of the solution by removing any adult involvement in the assessment process. In short, it provides a more accurate, objective assessment and resilience report that the young person is more likely to engage with since it is self-generated. The Report provides insight into the key issues of their person strengths, the risks they face in their environment and the mechanisms available to them mitigating for these risks.

Parents and Care givers – After a child has used APPA, Parents and Caregivers are given access to the child’s Resilience Report describes how well the child is performing on 11 different Wellbeing Indicators:

Teachers – Making APPA available to students means a huge amount of information about resilience can be generated outside classroom time. Teachers receive unbiased resilience reports that could help them identify which pupils are doing well and those who would benefit from extra support. APPA even provides a process for educators to produce an Action Plans to help students improve their resilience.
Since APPA reassesses students periodically, educators using APPA have a tool to verify if interventions are actually improving the young person’s resilience.

Mental Health Professionals – Never has homework been more fun for young clients. Even better, mental health professionals receive summaries of young persons’ resilience detailing their performance on 11 different Wellbeing Indicators detailed above.
APPA provides mental health professionals with all the answers that the child has given…as long as the young person has given their permission.
